Overarching Idea: Many children are coming from poverty to school and have different mindsets, habits and examples of appropriate behavior. We as educators must readjust our instructional methods and practices in order to help them achieve success in school and ultimately life in general.

Learning Target: Students will be able to identify some of the characteristics of generational poverty and explain two different ways that educators can help children of poverty be successful.

Materials:
Technology: Power point presentation, website, computer video, document camera

Printed materials: Case studies for group work (3), “stand-your-position” pre-test, Final post-test, handout of slides to follow along with presentation

Outline of lesson:
1. Before lesson, hang 10 pre-test statements around the room.
2. Give each student 5 dots to place on the statement they feel is the most important when it comes to dealing with students of poverty.
3. Allow students to place dots on posters. Let them know when there is one minute remaining. While they are engage in activity, post learning target on white board. (5 minutes)
4. Present power point presentation on the characteristics of generational poverty and the issues that children coming from this background face at home and school and the steps educators can take to help students of poverty, focusing on the last two areas: (10-15 minutes)

a. Instruction and Improving Achievement
b. Creating Relationships

5. Give case-studies to groups to talk about resources the child has and ways the school/educator could help this child. Allow 5 minutes for the groups to discuss situation than allow each group to share their insight. (20 minutes total)

6. Show video for final thoughts. (5 minutes) Give out post-test that students need to complete and turn back in to me.

Accommodations:
• Learning modalities: Written, verbal, auditory, and visual.
• Group ELL students with higher English speakers to help their language skills.
• Allow those with visual or auditory problems to sit close to the front of the room.

Assessments:
Group pre-test with “stand your position” posters, questions during lesson, group feedback, post-test
